H288: Is this one thing or two or infinitely many things? Introduction to Metaphysics of Identity in Splash Spring 2019 (Feb. 23, 2019)
Let's play with clay and ponder upon the nature of things- is a clay statue (that is made of clay) just one thing (the clay statue)? Then what happens to the lump of clay that you made the statue with? What about you yourself- you would think that there is only one and the same you that persisted for more than a decade, but how can the same person have different bodies at different times (e.g. 8 lbs then and 150 lbs now)? In this class, we will discuss some philosophical puzzles regarding the identity of things--mainly how an object can survive through change--and build philosophical responses to those puzzles.
