P269: Politics are cool, but what can I do? in Splash Spring 2018 (Feb. 24, 2018)
You may have heard about presidential elections, Black Lives Matter, the Women's March, and this strange word called "civics." You may have heard about affirmative action, the Chicano movement, and social justice. Or maybe have heard people talk about "the state of our nation," communities of color, and that you have to be 18 and a citizen to vote in the US. (if you haven't heard of one or many of these terms, we will cover all of these and more; you and everyone is welcome!) But what do these terms mean to you? How can YOU be a force of change and needed conversations in your community? Yes, YOU! This course will dip students' feet into our individual notions of family, community, and identity; our experiences seeing things happening to the people around us that we don't believe should be happening; and possibly have even thought about ways these problems could change. Every student, every person, every one of you can be a force for change, starting in small ways.
