P358: Nature and Bureaucracy in Mass Media: An Intersectional Approach in Splash Spring 2020 (Feb. 22, 2020)
Progress in America is often culturally narrated as an impossibility, particularly when characterized by notions of the “wild” – the ‘outdoors,’ the ‘untamed,’ the ‘barbaric’ – and the “organized” – government, regulation, construction and development. Yet one must consider that both of these representations are fundamentally anthropocentric and situated in our biases around normal social behavior. What happens when, for better or for worse, an actor deviates from such norms? In this class, we will use twenty-first century popular portrayals of such unorthodox situations as a framing device to consider how “normal” it actually is to go about one’s quotidian existence while attempting to contravene or overlook the inevitable clash of these dueling states of affairs.

A293: Songwriting 1-0-FUN! in Splash Spring 2019 (Feb. 23, 2019)
Interested in songwriting or composition? Always wanted to create your own music, but never quite sure where to start? We'll cover the basics of music theory and composition, then write a song as a class. This class will be participation-heavy, so come prepared to chip in with your ideas! Also, feel free (but not obligated) to come with your own instrument.
