M245: Web design from scratch, for beginners in Splash Spring 2018 (Feb. 24, 2018)
Curious how websites work? Interested in making your own? Cool! We'll learn how websites turn from files on the Internet to pages in your browser, and we'll learn how to create our own websites from nothing, using basic HTML and CSS code. I'll explain why understanding basic HTML and CSS is so important to web design, even in a world where different tools enable users to make websites without knowing any code. I'll be teaching you the fundamentals that you can build off of to create all sorts of cool stuff yourself. Seriously, no experience necessary--if you can use a computer, you're set! Hope to see you there!

H274: Faking it: how technologies alter what we know and believe in Splash Spring 2018 (Feb. 24, 2018)
"Seeing is believing," goes one saying. Another: "a picture is worth a thousand words." How do the technologies around us change what we know and believe about the world? What are the implications of rapidly advancing software that can fake voices and videos of real people really, really well? In this class, we'll think about the ways in which technologies like newspapers, photographs, and video editing software have been used to deceive people into "seeing" the world in alternate ways. We'll talk about propaganda, believing in fairies, democracy, and everything in between. Come and let's learn together! Everyone is welcome!
