A307: Building the Disney Musical in Splash Spring 2019 (Feb. 23, 2019)
Have you ever wondered about how Disney's movie musicals are written? How do the songs work? How do they function in the story? In Building the Disney Musical, we'll look at Disney movies from The Little Mermaid to Moana and discuss how aspects of screenwriting and songwriting fuse to create something, well, magical!

A262: Anatomy of a Hit Song in Splash Spring 2018 (Feb. 24, 2018)
Have you ever wondered what makes a song a hit? In this class, we will discuss a variety of reasons why some songs stick with you while others fall by the wayside. We will examine some of the most popular pop/rock songs from different eras and see what they have in common, if anything. Then, we'll look at a song that broke the rules and became one of the indomitable classics of popular music: Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody." We'll look at the craft of lyric writing and some rudimentary points of music theory, breaking these songs down and seeing what makes them tick. Who knows – maybe you'll be the one writing the next big hit song!

A204: Something Wicked This Way Comes in Splash Spring 2017 (Feb. 25, 2017)
Since opening on Broadway in 2003, Wicked has remained one of the most commercially successful and popular (pun intended) musicals around. It grosses millions of dollars a week, it has multiple international and touring productions running simultaneously, and the songs have developed a life of their own. But how did we get here? In Something Wicked This Way Comes, we'll discuss the rise of the show that managed to bounce back from terrible reviews to become the musical juggernaut it is today. We'll listen to songs, look at quotes from the creative team, and put the show in a larger context of what it means to be a modern musical in the decades-old art of musical theatre. If you heard "Defying Gravity" on Glee or heard Mika and Ariana Grande sing "Popular Song" and wondered where those hits came from, then this is the class for you!

L229: Lunch Period in Splash Spring 2017 (Feb. 25, 2017)
