S123: Energy and the Future of Our Planet in Splash Spring 2016 (Feb. 27, 2016)
Growing up in the 21st century means being aware and understanding the risks of climate change. This large, multifaceted problem is likely to change the course of human history, and if we don't act decisively, it will be catastrophic. A large cause of climate change, scientists say, is the burning of fossil fuels. Unfortunately, many countries, including the US, are dependent on coal, oil and natural gas for most of their energy. If we are to combat climate change, we need to transition to other sources of energy. This transition requires breakthroughs in science and engineering in order to make renewable sources of energy competitive with fossil fuels. This class takes a brief look at different forms of alternative energy and discusses the science behind them, the current problems with them, and what researchers are trying to improve them.
